Polypores from the Hapalopilus genus have caused poisoning in several people with effects including kidney dysfunction and deregulation of central nervous system functions. Some polypores have been used in ritual and for utilitarian purposes for ages; the famous Ötzi the Iceman was found carrying two different polypore species, Piptoporus betulinus which was notable for its antibacterial properties, and Fomes fomentarius, which, although also having medicinal properties, was likely used for starting fires. • Two medicinal mushroom polypores used today are Ganoderma lucidum coll. (reishi or lingzhi) Trametes versicolor (turkey tail). Beyond traditional use, contemporary research has suggested many applications of polypores for the treatment of illnesses related to the immune system and cancer recovery. • Several species have been studied for their ability to produce compounds with anti-pathogenic activity. • Modern: • Folk: • Foreign: • Use: Food, Beverage, Hygiene, Medical, Utility - Distractionary Trade Item • Prep: Raw, Boiled, Steamed, Dried, etc • Looks Like: • Tastes Like: • Smells Like • Feels Like • Takes How Long: • Best used as. • Date of Harvest: May 12, 2015 • Host: Tree/branches/twigs/ground/decaying • Live/Decay: decay • Type of Tree: • Season / Time of Year: May • Preferred Growth Time: May • Location/Region: Central Missouri - Ozarks • Best Time to Harvest: Early May • Search String, References Resources used: • Online:: • Google Search String: orange/polypore/diamond/hexagonal/bracket/fungus/ • Orange - Hexagonal-Pored Polypore - diamond-shaped, honeycombed polypore • WIKI - • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polypore • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bracket... • Field Guides used: • MDC - online: http://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/ • http://mdc.mo.gov/category/editorial • (Peterson Field Guides) • Peterson Field Guide to Mushrooms: N.
