Exercise in general has been known to have neurogenesis-enhancing effects. But how exactly? Well, it is commonly known exercise results in the systemic release of many factors into the blood which could be sensed by neural stem cells in the brain. The question is determining which of these factors are important and relevant to this event. • This brings us onto selenium. Selenium is an essential element you get through your diet from brazil nuts, tuna, eggs, sunflower seeds and oysters. Selenium gets incorporated into proteins as selenocysteine and these proteins are involved in redox regulation and development. • A recent study has brought these two topics together showing that exercise induces selenoprotein p in the blood plasma and this can promote neurogenesis in the hippocampus of the brain. Alternatively to exercise, selenium supplementation in mice also worked and improved spatial memory. But, you might want to be careful that your selenium levels do not get too high... • Find me on Twitter -   / eleanorsheekey   • The website - https://www.thesheekeyscienceshow.com/ • Support the channel • through PayPal - https://paypal.me/sheekeyscience?coun... • through Patreon -   / thesheekeyscienceshow   • TIMESTAMPS • Intro - 00:00 • Selenium - 00:17 • Exercise - 02:00 • Brain boost by selenium? - 02:45 • Goldilocks effect - 05:45 • REFERENCES: • Selenium Deficiency Is Associated with Pro-longevity Mechanisms - https://doi.org/10.1016/j.celrep.2019... • Selenium mediates exercise-induced adult neurogenesis and reverses learning deficits induced by hippocampal injury and aging - https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cmet.2022.0... • Widely available supplement may explain brain boost from exercise - https://www.science.org/content/artic... • Please note that The Sheekey Science Show is distinct from Eleanor Sheekey's teaching and research roles at the University of Cambridge.
