Kermanshah, Achaemenian, Parthian Historic Site at Behistun Inscription of Darius • In Antiquity, Bagastâna, which means place where the gods dwell , was the name of a village and a remarkable, isolated rock along the road that connected the capitals of Babylonia and Media, Babylon and Ecbatana (modern Hamadan). Many travellers passed along this place, so it was the logical place for the Persian king Darius I the Great (r.522-486) to proclaim his military victories. The famous Behistun inscription, which is a multilingual inscription, was engraved on a cliff about 100 meters off the ground. Darius tells us how the supreme god Ahuramazda choose him to dethrone an usurper named Gaumâta, how he set out to quell several revolts, and how he defeated his foreign enemies. • The branch of the Aryan trade roads that passes below Mount Behistun runs between Ekbatana / Hamadan and Kermanshah city. Across the road from the monument is a caravanserai. • Statue of Hercules is located in Mount Behistun and was discovered around 1957. The statue was sculpted in 153 BCE for a governor of the Seleucid Empire or the Parthian Empire. The historic site covers 116 hectares and has located within it sixteen historical monuments. Some of these monuments include the Darius reliefs and inscriptions that can be seen towering above the base of Mount Behistun. The site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006 • https://www.britannica.com/place/Bisitun • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behistu... • https://www.thoughtco.com/behistun-in... • https://www.livius.org/articles/place... • https://www.heritageinstitute.com/zor... • http://www.heritageinstitute.com/zoro...
