It's the fifth most played live song in the band's catalog, the second most played from Nevermind , only behind Polly , way ahead of Smells Like Teen Spirit . • They played it at least 211 times, which means more than half Nirvana shows have seen Breed tearing the audience apart. The song debuted in October 1989 and is the second song from Nevermind introduced to the fans. Behind Polly again. Breed was on the list at Nirvana's final show in Munich on March 1, 1994. • Breed was written in 1989 and initially was named Imodium after the anti-diarrheal medicine that Tad Doyle from TAD used during the '89 European joint Nirvana/TAD tour. Sometimes the early versions are called Immodium (with double m) because that's how Kurt spelled the medicine's name in his journals. Illiteracy did prevail indeed as was promised by Kurt in good ol' Fecal Matter demo. The king of the illiterate, huh? • • The song was still being called Imodium in April 1990, when Nirvana entered the Smart Studio with Butch Vig to record their second album for Sub Pop. It was not meant to be, they signed for a major and re-recorded the songs at Sound City in May, 1991. Immodium from Smart Studio can be found on the Nevermind 25th-anniversary edition. • While recording Breed at Sound City, Kurt did four vocal takes, but each succeeding take was worse than the previous one. So the first take stood. • The bass is distorted as hell.
