(29 Dec 1996) French/Eng/Rus/Nat • • The crown Jewel of New York's end of year festivities, the International Debutante Ball, was held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Saturday • • Known as Fun Ball , the coming out occasion of various debutantes from around the world included Jennie Eisenhower, granddaughter of former president Richard Nixon, and great-granddaughter of another former president Ike Eisenhower. • • The 43rd International Debutante Ball opened with the pomp and ceremony of a royal extravaganza. • • Taking part in the coming out ceremony were 36 women from seven countries and 14 American states. • • The Debutantes, with representative flags of their countries in the background, greeted the guests in the Basildon Room. • • Leading the procession was Jennie Elizabeth Eisenhower, 18, granddaughter and great- granddaughter of two former U-S presidents, Richard Nixon and Ike Eisenhower. • • In addition to raising funds for the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Club, the debutantes believe the Ball is a way of keeping traditions going. • • SOUNDBITE: (English) • Why I'm here? Well my parents did this 30 years ago and so its really special for me because I'm kind of following in their footsteps. And they had a wonderful time at the ball 30 years ago, so I'm really excited. A 17-year old, wearing the family heirloom around the neck, is the daughter of Her Royal Highness Chantal of France and Baron de Sambucy of Sorgue. • • SOUNDBITE: (French) • We must observe certain traditions, it's important. For connoisseurs of fashion, there were a dazzling styles designed by international gurus of fashion world. • • Each honouree was individually flanked by two escorts.
