In 1970 Earl Hamner wrote 'The Homecoming', a novel based on his Christmas Eve experiences from 1933. CBS made it into a Christmas special which led to 'The Waltons' (1972), a series that would air for nine seasons, narrated by Hamner himself. The Depression-era family drama focused on John-Boy Walton (based on Hamner), his parents, grandparents, and six siblings. The episodes covered 1933 to 1946 (later specials would extend the timeline to 1969). 'The Waltons' won multiple Emmys, a Peabody Award, and was included in TV Guide's '60 Best Series of All Time'. Jerry Goldsmith had scored 'The Homecoming' but CBS wanted something livelier for a weekly series...and Goldsmith delivered. • 0:00 Opening titles, season one. • 1:38 Opening titles, season five. • 2:21 Opening titles, season nine. • 3:19 End credits, season one. • 4:05 Epilogue • 4:16 BONUS: Jerry Goldsmith's theme for 'The Homecoming'.
