http://www.postercentral.com A 1966 window card for Them with Van Morrison on their one only United States tour. • This placard was constructed of durable cardboard, not paper. • There are actually six other bands plus an M.C. advertised on this Them tour poster. • It’s not easy to find an original Them poster from America because the band broke up shortly after this tour, or even while still on it. • It’s interesting to note that this in-person poster was made by Tilghman Press of Oakland, CA, and that’s the same city where the concert took place. But Tilghman made concert posters back then for the entire northwestern United States. • This Them broadside features a publicity photo of the group, which is nice because Van Morrison went on to become such a legendary solo performer. • Mr. Morrison is in the back row middle, with no tied showing, on this Them show placard. He’s only 20 years old! • Bill Graham produced a couple of posters for the group this year, but it’s much more unusual to find a Them boxing-style concert poster like this. • Notice the “split-fountain” effect on this Them concert placard… the inks change from red at the top, to blue, to black at the bottom. • Even the headliner’s name is caught up in this split-fountain effect, morphing from red into blue. • It’s kind of interesting the way the show’s Master of Ceremonies, Tony Biggs of KYA radio, got billing over the six support bands. • The band was marketed as a British Invasion group by its record label, but the Belfast, Ireland group didn’t really agree with that. So there’s no mention of the so-called British Invasion on this Them appearance poster. • It’s too bad there are no song titles displayed on this Them billboard. The group had charted four singles in the U.S. by this point, but unfortunately, none of them cracked Billboard magazine’s Top 20. • Still, can you imagine how awesome it would be if Tilghman’s Them ticket poster said “Gloria” right by the band’s name… whew! I would also have loved it if “Mystic Eyes” or “Here Comes the Night” were mentioned. • A few weeks before the concert which is advertised on this Them tour placard, the group played at L.A.’s Whiskey-A-Go-Go night club in a three week residency. And yes, The Doors opened for them during one of those weeks. Can you just imagine THAT concert poster!!! • The group gigged around America for a month following this show, winding up at Bill Graham’s Fillmore again on July 29-30. Then they broke up over money problems. • It’s great to see The Association’s name on this Them sign… their first hit, “Along Comes Mary,” had just entered the charts three weeks prior. • Same with the Grass Roots, who are listed as one word on this Them concert announcement… their first hit had entered the charts just one week ago, so both bands were right on the cusp of stardom. • Notice the ticket prices range from two a half to four a half bucks… even the best ticket was less than five dollars! • The other opening acts, as advertised on this Them window poster, were The Baytovens, The Wildflower, The Harbinger Complex and Wm. Penn His Pals. • And notice how it says: Leander Productions Present Them In Concert, Oakland Auditorium Arena, Sun., June 26th – At 8:15 p.m. I’ve researched Leander, but can’t find anything about them. • Last but not least: Surely you’ve seen the scribbling at the top of this Them advertisement… why, it’s none other than Van Morrison’s autograph, given to John Goddard of Village Music in Mill Valley, CA, where this poster was displayed for many years. • This Them street sign is enthusiastically displayed by vintage poster collector Pete Howard.
