In his public keynote in scope of the Master Fine Arts symposium “Speculative Futures: Are We Burning Our Past?” Armen Avanessian covers some recent manifestations of Ethnofuturism, which break with historical Futurism and its racist, sexist, and warmongering ideologies while still embracing the new complex temporality we live in. Afrofuturism, Sinofuturism, Gulf-Futurism and others do not simply present new visions of the future; they seek to tap into technological potentials, taking the political weight of ethnic and racial diversity into account. • Armen Avanessian studied philosophy and political science in Vienna and Paris. He worked at the Free University Berlin from 2007-2014 and has previously been a Visiting Fellow in the German Department at Columbia University and in the German Department at Yale University, as well as visiting professor at various art academies in Europe and the US, and fellow at the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles. In Berlin he is editor at large at Merve Verlag and in charge of a “SprechDenkTheater” theory program at Volksbühne. He is also co-founder of the bilingual research platform Spekulative Poetik (www.spekulative-poetik.de) and the Berlin-based graduate school School of Disobedience (https://schoolofdisobedience.net). His work has been translated into various languages. Avanessian's monographic publications include “Irony and the Logic of Modernity” (DeGruyter, 2015), “Speculative Drawing” (with Andreas Töpfer, Sternberg Press, 2014), “Present Tense. A Poetics” (with Anke Hennig, Bloomsbury, 2015), “Metanoia. A Speculative Ontology of Language, Thinking, and the Bain” (with Anke Hennig, Bloomsbury, 2017), “Overwrite. Ethics of Knowledge – Poetics of Existence” (Sternberg Press, 2017), “Miamification” (Sternberg Press, 2017), and “Future Metaphysics” (Polity, 2019). • • More information: https://www.zhdk.ch/veranstaltung/43142
