Passamaquoddy Legends: Annotated Edition available on #Amazon a.co/d/4otqIvE • From video “What is a Passamaquoddy? by Michael W. Cook (c) 2023. • 4. American Patriots before American Citizens • During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), the Passamaquoddy actively supported the American struggle for independence from Great Britain. After Maine achieved statehood in 1820, the new state reclaimed Passamaquoddy lands and sold its lucrative timber rights - a direct violation of the 1794 Treaty (Cook Leland, 2021; Passamaquoddy Peoples’ Knowledge Portal, 2018). • Passamaquoddy men valiantly fought with distinction during the Civil War (1861-65) and World War I (1917-18) even though they were not considered U.S. citizens until Congress passed the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 (United States, Congress, 1924). • After being granted the right to vote, the Passamaquoddy have honorably served in every American conflict including World War II (1941-45), Korean War (1950-53), Vietnam War (1964-73), Persian Gulf War (1991), and the Global War on Terror (2001-present) (Trotter, 2016). • • The target audience is Maine K-12 students. The objectives are five historical facts about the Passamaquoddy Native American Tribe. Presented to pique curiosity about the Passamaquoddy Tribal culture and history. A secondary audience is the K-12 educators tasked to comply with the Maine law and will be a valuable resource for learners and educators. Linguistic quarriers are directed to the Passamaquoddy-Maliseet Dictionary. • • REFERENCES: • Cook, M. Leland, C. (2021). Passamaquoddy Legends: Glooskap, Lox, Master Rabbit, and other tales.
