When talking about representation in art it is about what you can recognize in art. Figurative art represents objects from your daily world, usually looking easily recognizable. When you look at abstracted art you can still recognize things until it becomes totally abstract where you can’t anymore. It is in fact a scale where one side is photorealistic and the other end of the spectrum is abstract, so realism abstraction being the opposites. There is also art that doesn’t relate to anything and is just art. You will find this in the minimalism art movement.
