All the myths developed by the Nordic peoples are part of a hostile natural environment: the harshness of the living conditions, the long winter nights and the omnipresence of water leave their mark on the strong characters of the hero. Wars against invaders are recurrent when the Nordics do not become invaders themselves, like the Vikings. Life is just a long battle between, on one side, darkness and cold, and on the other, light and fire.
