There are different causes of swellings noted on the newborn baby's head. Cephalhematoma is a bleed that happens on the surface of the skull bone, underneath its covering called periosteum. It may not be seen soon after birth, and may be prominent after the first day or so. It is firm, fluctuant and is limited by the suture margin. It takes a few weeks to resolve and follows a typical pattern. No specific treatment is needed, apart from monitoring for jaundice. Caput is subcutaneous fluid collection to the presenting part, and subgaleal bleed is a more serious condition with risk of anemia and hypotension. • #caput #swellingonbabyhead #Cephalhematoma
