   • BMW E36 starter install HOT tips!   • Special tools: E-12 torx socket, 1/4 drive ratchet w/swiveling head, 3/8 drive ratchet w/swiveling head, 1/4-3/8 drive adapter w/rounded end, 15 worth of 3/8 drive extensions. • If you are working on a 6-cylinder E36, then I feel sorry for you. You have to remove the intake manifold. And when you start removing old car parts, things ALWAYS break! • If you are working on a 4-cylinder, then you can do all the work without removing anything extra (other than the oil dipstick tube and disconnecting the brake line clamp from the hard point). • Removing the dipstick tube takes some effort. The break fluid reservoir needs to be carefully flexed out of the way to pull it out of the block. When reinstalling it, try bending the tube against your knee to help with reinstallation. This will, of course, change the angle of the tube and make removing the dipstick a little more difficult, and will make the oil level read LOWER than what it actually is. My oil level was at the top of the fill line before I bent it. Now, it is 1/4 inch BELOW the need oil line!!! So, beware! You can actually OVERFILL your oil! Therefore, as with this entire instructional video, BEND THE DIPSTICK OIL TUBE AT YOUR OWN RISK! • Note: There are 2 styles of starter motors. One has threaded mounting ears, and the other does not. Look at the forward end of your stater. If you don't see nuts at the end of your mounting bolts, then, you need the threaded style. • If you need the unthreaded style, then you are lucky! This is probably much easier to remove. You just have to hold the bolt end with something while breaking the torque on the nut. Of course, this is just a theory, since the one that I replaced was the threaded style. • This took me 4 hours to do. •    • BMW E36 starter install HOT tips!
