Hello YouTube, Todd Ault here, and Welcome to Wall Street Words! Today's Wall Street term is Bearer Bond • Bearer like: I own it, is a bond issued and when you buy it, you physically have the certificate. Now, when you want your interest payments, you have to pull off the tab, or, the coupon and turn it into a bank to get paid. They don't have a particular name on them. Certificates are vulnerable to theft and they're virtually extinct in the United States because of money laundering, theft, and all kinds of issues. But Bearer Bonds used to be famous. They used to be popular, they used to be around. Governments issued Bearer Bonds, corporations issued Bearer Bonds, and they were a valuable way you could exchange currency. They weren't on a regular market and they had no registered owner. They were very vulnerable to theft. And as I said, they're virtually nonexistent in the United States. They do have Bearer Bonds in other places around the world. But these are really dangerous. Nowadays Bearer Bonds are held in electronic form and they're registered to a particular name or corporation, and, therefore, theft is a lot harder. Today's word is Bearer Bonds. • Definition - A bearer bond is a fixed-income security that is owned by the holder, or bearer, rather than by a registered owner. The coupons for interest • payments are physically attached to the security. The bondholder is • required to submit the coupons to a bank for payment and then • redeem the physical certificate when the bond reaches the maturity • date. As with registered bonds, bearer bonds are negotiable • instruments with a stated maturity date and a coupon interest rate. • Bearer bonds are virtually extinct in the U.S. and some other countries • as the lack of registration made them ideal for use in money • laundering, tax evasion, and any number of other under-handed • transactions. They also are vulnerable to theft. • In today's world, knowledge is powerful and I'm here to share my 30+ years of Wall Street experience with you.
