#2 from Poésies, Op.55 (1897) • ----------------------------------------------- • Phillip Sear plays a piece from a set of eight by the Russian-born pianist and composer Eduard (or Edouard) Schütt (1856–1933). • ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Born in St. Petersburg in 1856, Schütt studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Theodor Leschetizky and later continued his musical education in Leipzig. His career as a composer and performer spanned the late Romantic period, and he was known for his lyrical and expressive style. He gained recognition for his piano works, which were popular among both professional musicians and amateur pianists of his time. Schütt's compositions included a wide range of pieces, from solo piano works to chamber music and orchestral compositions. While Schütt's music was widely performed during his lifetime, his popularity waned in the 20th century, and he is now considered a minor figure in the history of Russian music. Schütt's highly finished music is cosmopolitan in style, but, rather like that of Fauré, it has some very distinctive harmonic and technical fingerprints that make it immediately identifiable. He died in Vienna, where he had spent much of his later life, and where he had a successful piano teaching practice. • The set from which this piece comes was dedicated to the American (Washington-born) pianist Lotta Mills (ca.1873 — ?). Like Schütt, Mills was a Leschetizky pupil, who made a career as both a solo and collaborative pianist. She married one Williston Hough in 1901, and after his untimely death in 1912 dated Percy Grainger from 1918 to 1922. Grainger played two-pianos with Mills, and there is an extant recording of her playing his 'Gum-Sucker's March and also piano rolls of her playing this and another piece with Grainger. I believe that she subsequently taught piano in New York. • Thumbnail image created with Wombo Dream ( https://rb.gy/ekerq ). • #russianmusic #solitude #lonelymusic • ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Played by Phillip Sear • http://www.psear.co.uk (Email: [email protected] • WhatsApp: http://wa.me/441444483794 ) TikTok:   / pianogems
