Vimovo is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis in adults over the age of 18. • Vimovo tablets are only prescribed to people who need to keep taking naproxen 500mg twice daily to relieve the pain of their arthritis, but who are also at a high risk of getting a peptic ulcer. • Vimovo tablets contain the two active ingredients, esomeprazole and naproxen. • Naproxen is a type of medicine called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID for short. It provides relief in pain and inflammation in arthritis by blocking the production of substances in the body called prostaglandins. When prostaglandins are produced, they promote swelling, pain, and inflammation in the body in response to injury. Hence, by decreasing their production, felbinac reduces pain and inflammation in the body. • However, prostaglandins also play a role in maintaining a healthy stomach and intestinal lining. As naproxen reduces the production of these substances it can cause damage to gut lining, causing ulcers. • Esomeprazole is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor. It works in the stomach, where it decreases the production of stomach acid.
