This video presents the first 67 lines of Book 1 (Ραψωδία Α) of Homer's Iliad (Ιλιάδα) in three languages, from top to bottom: • -- Homeric Greek • -- Modern Greek (verse translation by Iakovos Polylás, read by Eirini Antonogiannaki) • -- English (translation by A. T. Murray, adapted by Stephen Clothier) • The Iliad, one of the oldest and greatest extant epic poems in Western literature, is dated sometime around the 8th century BC and is attributed to the Greek poet Homer. The poem is divided into 24 rhapsodies and contains 15,693 lines. Set during the Trojan War, the decade-long siege of Troy (Ilium) by the Greeks, it tells of the battles and events of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and Achilles, the greatest of all the Greek warriors, that occurred in the final year of the war. • The text famously launches 'in media res,' towards the end of the Trojan War, with the Greeks, led by Agamemnon, besieging the city of Troy, led by Priam.
