Actinotroch – the larva of the horseshoe worms (Phylum Phoronida) • Actinotroca – a larva dos vermes foronídeos (Filo Phoronida) • A video by Alvaro E. Migotto • The larvae of the horseshoe worms, marine animals belonging to the Phylum Phoronida, are among the most beautiful creatures in the ocean. Most actinotrochs - the name coined to refer to the phoronid larvae – spend several weeks drifting in the plankton and eating planktonic organisms. They range in length from less than half millimeter to 2-3 mm. • This specimen was collected in the Chanel of São Sebastião, Brazil, using a plankton net. It was recorded in slow motion (480 fps) under a stereomicroscope coupled with a Sony NX-FS700 video camera. • Recorded at the Center for Marine Biology (CEBIMar), University of São Paulo (http://www.usp.br/cbm/), at São Sebastião, by Alvaro E. Migotto.
