April 8, 2009: Around 7:30 this morning, both Kestrels were in the nest box. When a Jackdaw flew by, Monsieur Kestrel immediately went to the porch to defend the nest! Later, he flew away, and Madame stayed to look around and try out the corner of the nest box, where she would lay eggs. • • Then she called to Monsieur, who hurried back to pair with her. • • The European Kestrel, Falco tinnunculus , is slightly larger but less colorful than the American Kestrel, Falco sparverius. • • Raptor talons are sharp and are used to kill prey. For the female to allow the male to stand on her back signifies a great deal of trust. The female moves her tail to one side so that their cloacas are pressed together. The male cloaca is slightly smaller than the female's, with a more prominent and protruding rim. Some ornithologists have called this mating the cloacal kiss. • • Will the Kestrels take charge of the nest box?
