The Fetterman Massacre, also known as the Fetterman Fight, was a significant conflict between the United States Army and Native American tribes that occurred on December 21, 1866. This event took place near Fort Phil Kearny, Wyoming, which was a military post along the Bozeman Trail, a route connecting the gold rush territory of Montana to the Oregon Trail. • The battle was named after Captain William J. Fetterman, who led a detachment of 80 soldiers from the fort to respond to a Native American attack on a wood-cutting party. This was part of the ongoing warfare between the U.S. government and the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes, who were defending their hunting grounds against the intrusion of settlers and the construction of forts along the Bozeman Trail. • The Native American forces, led by leaders such as Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, and others, lured Fetterman and his men into an ambush. All 81 members of the U.S. detachment, including Fetterman and Lieutenant George Grummond, were killed in the encounter. This defeat was one of the worst suffered by the U.S. Army during the Indian Wars and led to increased military action in the region. • The Fetterman Massacre highlighted the intensity and complexity of the conflicts between the U.S. government and the Native American tribes during the westward expansion period in American history. It was a significant factor leading up to the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868, where the U.S. government agreed to abandon the Bozeman Trail and the forts along it. • • Looking to buy or sell go here ---- https://jamesbigleyranches.com/media/ • Contact me: [email protected] • Subscribe for content on ranching, land, and property related to real estate, history, hunting, wildlife, conservation, and ranching mainly in the United States. • Schedule a 15-minute no-obligation call with me: • https://calendly.com/jbigley/15min • James Bigley • 679621 • Texas law requires all real estate licensees to give the following information about brokerage services to prospective buyers, tenants, sellers, and landlords: • Texas Commission Information About Brokerage Services • https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bpgF... • Texas Commission Consumer Protection Notice • https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nH06... • 00:00 Introduction • 00:13 Decoy by Crazy Horse • 00:47 Captain Fetterman Advances • 01:02 The Trap • 01:27 Adolf Metzker • 01:47 Red Cloud's War
