( Further comments below ) • On a lot of model railways most of the track is ballasted in the normal way, and that includes all the sidings in the yards and shed areas. Which is fine if you like the look and consider it realistic etc.(I must admit the dark grey is very drab) • But im wondering if everyone is just copying what someone else has done rather than taking a simple look at the real ground areas in and around railway sidings and yards. With a simple look you will see that in most cases very little ballast is ever showing, and the ground level is often right up to the chairs. • In my opinion these are two points that seem to get over looked and I am applying grey filler to all such areas to try and give a far more realistic effect of compacted ash cinder and clinker etc. which dramatically changes the overall look. • Now I know this is going against the normal approach and will not be every ones first choice ,,,, black locos against a black ground colour is not my first choice either, but perhaps if your looking for a more realistic look to sidings etc then its something that has to be considered....
