Our employers are more powerful than us. That’s why we need laws to protect our rights in the workplace. • NASA was so powerful that I was sure beating them was impossible. They do awe-inspiring, impossible things. I was smart, but I knew they were smarter. And their public image didn’t exactly help my confidence. NASA is everywhere. Hoodies, coffee mugs… you name it. People love NASA. • Fighting discrimination is a long stressful process. It can take you down fast if you let it. To hang in for the whole fight, you have to be tough. • Toughness is both a mindset and a skill set. • First let’s talk bout the mindset… • My mom became an engineer in a time place where women weren’t supposed to be. She also raised two daughters alone, me and my sister who has special needs. Mom was tough as nails. • Whenever I went to her with a problem, afraid I couldn’t handle it, she’d come back with “Oh yes you can.” Her girls were raised to be warriors, not princesses. • Warriors have confidence in their ability to deal with whatever challenges lie ahead. • That’s the mindset of toughness. • Now let’s talk about the skill set that goes along with it. I won’t be able to cover all the skills in this video. But I want to talk about a few of the ones that helped me hang in. • Commitment to a Goal: No matter how solid your case is, there are gonna be times when you feel like you can’t win and you aren’t sure it’s worth it. Being committed to a goal will help you through those times. • Self-Talk: There are going to be moments of self doubt. When we encounter pretext about how our performance is slipping or how we can’t get along with people or whatever they’re using to justify their illegal behavior, self-doubt is natural. Our employer blames us, and on some level, we buy into that and start wondering if maybe I DESERVE to be treated this way. I talked back to self-doubt…. with affirmations of my abilities or worthiness… With mantras to help manage my nerves… And sometimes with simple reminders of the facts. • Imagery: Making a picture in your mind of what you’re working toward can keep you focused and motivated when you encounter setbacks. Since I couldn’t do anything to control the EEOC process, I committed to managing my physical stress with sleep, nutrition gentle exercise. • Impulse Control: We have to contain our anger, but when our employers cross lines, we also need to express it - in a way that won’t bite us later. When NASA's Diversity Manager threatened to put me on a PIP so my boss could fire me, I wanted to confront her about it, but I knew that no matter how carefully I did that, she’d spin it against me. But knew if I didn’t challenge her at all, NASA would eventually find a way to fire me, sooner rather than later. I had to find a way to express my anger without self-sabotaging. I did that by being firm and professional. • My mom raised me to be tough, but the EEOC process still tested my commitment, resolve and stamina. Looking back and knowing that I was able to pass that test felt great and ;left me with a sense self-mastery that did more than help me hang in at EEOC. It helps me hang in in other areas too. I try to be open and vulnerable with the people I love. But I love knowing that when I need to be a bad beach, I can be. • So can you. Own your power. • Here's the video I referenced, that shares more about how I fought my PP: •    • How to Fight Illegal Retaliation   WI...   • • ---- All opinions are my own. Not LEGAL advice. Just me sharing my perspective as an employee who went through the EEOC claims process won. I am not an expert at all things EEOC. While I do my best to be factual in my observations, viewers should assume that all observations or statements are ALLEGEDLY. *Never trust your fate to a YouTube content creator.
