They were which originally commissioned as a ‘set of voluntaries’ by the English publishers Coventry and Hollier in 1844. Mendelssohn, however, determined to extend the works beyond his first seven movements, and eventually regrouped them into a set of six sonatas. These are not pieces in classical sonata form, but they use the word as Bach had used it, for a collection or suite of varying pieces. Sonata no. 4 was the last to be written. The sonatas demand good standards of pitch and touch from the organ, as well as a satisfactory pedal board. Because the English instruments at that time were often not adequately equipped, the interest in the pieces grew slowly in Britain. • - - • The Lied Chancel Organ • SCHOENSTEIN CO., Organ Builders, • San Francisco, California • Opus 126 - 1997 • 4 Manual and Pedal Chancel Organ • 74 Voices - 95 Ranks • (85 Voices - 110 Ranks including Gallery Organ) • Electric Pneumatic Action • http://www.firstplymouth.org/pdf/lied...
