The Reichstag Fire was a tragic arson attack that happened on February 27, 1933, which burned the building that held the Reichstag (aka German Parliament) in Berlin. • The building was destroyed due to a series of fires set, but no one was killed during the fire. The exact number of people arrested were unclear, but it is estimated that hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals were detained in the immediate aftermath of the fire. • The attack was allegedly committed by Marinus van der Lubbe, a Dutch council Communist, but the newly named Reich Chancellor, Adolf Hitler, claimed the fire was part of a Communist attempt to overthrow the government. Van der Lubbe and four other Communists were arrested, and put on trial, resulting in van der Lubbe’s execution. Hitler used the fire as a way to seize absolute power in Germany, which paved the way for the rise of his Nazi regime and later to WWII and the deaths of millions of Jewish people. • • Reichstag Fire - Decree, 1933 Definition | HISTORY • The True Story of the Reichstag Fire and the Nazi Rise to Power | History| Smithsonian Magazine • #history , #Homeschooling, Conversation. • / @cheesepresseducation
