Now the castle of Kilbryde was built in 1460 by Clan Graham of menteith and was to house their chieftain’s line and all those named the earl of menteith. It is said that Kilbride was dedicated to one Sir John de Graeme of Dundaff known to many as Graham of the bright sword, a powerful and legendary figure in the clan’s history. Bright sword was a strong ally of Sir William Wallace during the Scottish wars for independence, some would even count him as Wallace’s right hand man and a warrior of immense bravery. It was he who stormed the English garrison at Lanark and killed the commander and all his men. Before going on to fight in the battle of stirling bridge and Falkirk. Unfortunately for the bright sword, it was during this battle that he would lose his life, but so united were Wallace and Graham that William was said to carried his friends body off the battle field himself and taken him to the old church in Falkirk. Now this connection between the bright sword and Wallace, may be at the very root of todays tale, as it was a member of graham’s family that would perform one of the most wicked acts of treachery in all of Scottish history, for it was one John de Menteith of Clan graham, the son of a close family member of the bright sword, That betrayed his loyalties to his people and country and sided with the English king. John de menteith was the man that betrayed Wallace and handed him over to the English in return for gold and titles. But in his home country of Scotland this deplorable man was granted the title of Menteith the treacherous and false. All those that supported an independent Scotland, free of English oppression bore a wild hatred for the man that turned on his leader, and it was said that many invoked ancient and dark spells, not only to cure the pitiful live of the treacherous, but also all those chieftains of Clan graham of menteith, that would come after him. And it is here our tale begins. • My T-shirt link: https://liath-wolf.myspreadshop.co.uk...
