See and hear an old Edison phonograph gramophone together with views of the major domestic audio recording systems: vinyl, audio cassette, CD, downloads . . . • In this video we look at the history of audio recording and in particular the Edison phonograph as well as an old 78 rpm gramophone record player. • The Edison phonograph was invented by Edison in 1877 and Edison filed his patent on 24th December of that year. However he did not start production of the Edison phonograph machines until the 1880s. • Edison phonographs were manufactured well into the early 20th Century, the phonograph shown in the video probably dates form around 1920. • The Edison phonographs played cylinders. The original ones lasted for 2 minutes, but later machines were also able to play 4 minute cylinders.
