The Buddha's public image in contemporary India is miles removed from what the source texts tell us about him, mainly in two related respects relating to a rebellion against Hindu Dharma, viz. a rejection of the Vedas, its rituals, philosophy and norms; esp. their assent to social inequalities, most notoriously caste (though it was in its formative stage then), and inequality between the sexes. Contrary to his current image, this was hardly a concern for the Buddha, whose spiritual focus would be pin-pricked as an opium for the people by modern egalitarianism.
