Typhoon Tip was the most intense storm in world history, with a recorded pressure of 870mb from a reconnaissance plane. With gaps in plane coverage, the actual intensity of this storm may have been even lower, as it peaked in October 1979 in the open Western Pacific ocean. • The storm later struck Japan as a much weakened but still very large typhoon, killing 111. Typhoon Tip is also known for being one of the largest tropical cyclones recorded.
