Open rotor engines are expected to consume substantially less fuel when compared with traditional ducted turbofans. Before rotor engines are installed on modern aircrafts, community noise must be tested minimized to ensure appropriate noise levels as planes fly overhead. • This simulation demonstrates the capability of SIMULIA PowerFLOW solver to predict the aerodynamics and the aeroacoustics of an open rotor. These capabilities are instrumental for engine and aircraft manufacturers to make essential design decisions to ensure functionality. • One of the major noise sources in open rotors is the front-aft rotor interaction: the wakes coming from front blade trailing edges are conveyed downstream and impact aft blade leading edges. Several strategies exist to minimize this interaction noise: changing the number of blades per rotor, cropping the aft blade, re-twisting blades to shift vertical structures towards less sensitive regions, masking the engines thanks to the tail planes or wings, etc. In order to assess the tradeoff of each design decision, manufacturers need high-fidelity simulations like the one shown here. • SIMULIA PowerFLOW CFD solver performs very-large eddy simulations based on lattice-Boltzmann methods for speeds ranging from very-low Mach numbers to supersonic flows. In a single simulation, both high-fidelity aerodynamics and far-field aeroacoustics can be predicted even for very complex geometries. • ================================= • Join the SIMULIA Community: • Create a profile, explore the platform, collaborate with peers, ask technical questions to Dassault Systèmes experts and uncover new possibilities.
