Nivedita Shukla Verma, Secretary, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, highlighted that plastic recycling offers a crucial solution to mitigate plastic waste and foster a circular economy. She stated, Despite its transformation from a material of wonder to a victim of its own success, the plastic industry continues to be a major contributor to the economy and provides employment to millions worldwide. She emphasized to stakeholders the necessity of a concerted and collaborative effort across various sectors. She articulated these insights during the inaugural session of the four-day 'Global Conclave on Plastic Recycling and Sustainability' (GCPRS) held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, where she graced the event as the chief guest. Smt. Nivedita Shukla Verma praised the efforts of the All India Plastics Manufacturers Association (AIPMA) and Petrochemicals Manufacturers Association (CPMA) for organizing a conclave on such a critically important topic, especially at a time when only ten percent of the global plastic waste is being recycled. Deepak Mishra, Joint Secretary, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, was also present in this conclave. • Smt. Mercy Epao, Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises also expressed the support of the Ministry of MSME for this cause, pointing out that a large number of enterprises from the plastic industry came under their department as well. She said that with the vision of doubling exports, and as part of their 100 days program, the Ministry has decided to set up a state of the art export center at Hyderabad. She also urged stakeholders to call on the benefits extended by the Ministry, adding that many more technology centers were under way. • An exhibition on plastic waste recycling technology also was organized at the GCPRS, drawing participation from entrepreneurs and experts in the plastic industry from India and abroad. Panel discussions during the four-day conclave addressed plastic waste recycling in industries such as automotive, electronics, and pharmaceuticals. The insights shared by speakers underscored the rapid growth of India’s plastic recycling industry, projecting it to reach $6.9 billion by 2033. The conclave delved into key issues surrounding plastic waste management. • AIPMA, Chairman, Governing Council AMTEC Chairman Shri Arvind D. Mehta expressed pride in preparing highly skilled professionals for India's burgeoning plastics industry. He highlighted that their institution was established to provide exceptional manpower and skill enhancement for the plastic manufacturing sector, and their achievements thus far are a testament to this mission. • CPMA President Shri Kamal Nanavati stated that plastic waste management is a global issue requiring collaboration among all value chain participants and the government. The GCPRS aims to provide a platform for dialogue and discussion to develop solutions. The Indian industry is actively working to enhance plastic circularity and ensure the effective implementation of regulatory requirements. • The conclave also featured addresses from AIPMA President Manish Dedhia, GCPRS 2024 Chairman Shri Hiten Bheda, and AIPMA Senior Vice President Shri Manoj R. Shah. Dr. Shyam Sundar, Director General of AIPMA, extended gratitude on behalf of the All India Plastics Manufacturers Association (AIPMA) and the Chemicals and Petrochemicals Manufacturers Association (CPMA) to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Ministry of MSME), and the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers for their support in organizing the conclave. Special contributions to the event were made by Kailash B. Murarka, Chandrakant Turakhia, Rajesh Gauba, Hanumant Sarraf, Siddharth R. Shah, and Pranav Kumar. Among other notable attendees were Prof. (Dr.) Shishir Sinha (Plastindia Foundation), Shri Ravish Kamath (Plastindia).
