On Providence (De Providentia) is a short essay in the form of a dialogue in six brief sections, written by the Latin philosopher Seneca (died AD 65) in the last years of his life. He chose the dialogue form (as in the well-known Plato's works) to deal with the problem of the co-existence of the Stoic design of providence with the evil in the world—the so-called problem of evil. • The essay begins with Seneca's friend Lucilius asking him why, if the world is ruled by providence, so many evils befall good men. Seneca responds by arguing that evil is not real, but is simply a matter of perspective. What appears to be evil is actually a test of virtue, and a necessary part of the journey to self-perfection. • Seneca compares the good man to a wrestler, who must train and struggle in order to become strong. Without adversity, the good man would never develop his full potential. He would become soft and complacent, and would eventually fall prey to vice. • Seneca also argues that evil can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. For example, a man who loses his fortune may be forced to learn the value of hard work and self-reliance. Or, a man who is exiled from his home may be given the opportunity to see the world and experience new cultures. • In the end, Seneca concludes that the wise man should accept whatever happens to him with equanimity. He should not complain about misfortune, but should see it as an opportunity to grow and learn. For the wise man, there is no such thing as evil. Only opportunity. • On Providence is a classic work of Stoic philosophy. It offers a powerful and inspiring message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. It is a must-read for anyone who is struggling to make sense of the world and find meaning in life. • ------------------------------ • I AM NOT PUTTING ANY MARKERS FOR THE CHAPTERS, BECAUSE I WANT YOU GUYS TO LISTEN THE WHOLE BOOK AND INCORPORATE THESE TEACHINGS/IDEAS IN YOUR LIFE. • ------------------------------ • JOIN OUR KO-FI PAGE FOR FREE ASSETS: • https://ko-fi.com/thewisdomproject • JOIN OUR TELEGRAM PAGE FOR FREE AUDIOBOOKS: • https://t.me/+lZZEqi6JC-U0NGU1 • ------------------------------ • 🔔🔔 Subscribe and turn on notifications to stay updated with the latest uploads. • #seneca #Stoicism #MarcusAurelius
