It honors Indra, the King of Heaven, who once descended to Earth in search of the sacred flower Parijat. Mistaken as a thief, he was captured by the locals. After discovering his true identity, they released him, and Indra blessed them with promises of abundant rainfall and prosperous harvests. This divine myth forms the foundation of the Indra Jatra celebrations. • 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂? • The festival kicks off with the raising of a 10-meter-long Linga pole at Kathmandu Durbar Square. During this ceremony, thousands gather to witness the unveiling of Akash Bhairab, a deity whose mask is filled with Rakshi (local liquor) and a small goldfish inside. Drinking the Rakshi is considered auspicious, and catching the fish is believed to bring good fortune. • Throughout Indra Jatra, lively masked dances and Pulu Kisi performances depict gods and demons, enriching the festival's vibrant atmosphere. The highlight is the grand chariot procession of the Living Goddess Kumari, accompanied by Ganesh and Bhairav. These chariots, adorned with flowers and colorful streamers, are pulled through Kathmandu's narrow streets by devotees in traditional attire. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗮 • The festival concludes with the ceremonial lowering of the Linga, which is then taken to the sacred Bagmati River and broken into pieces. These fragments are used to light Bhairav temples along the riverbank. The end of Indra Jatra signals the start of Nepal's two major festivals, Dashain and Tihar, celebrated with great enthusiasm nationwide. • 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗮: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗹’𝘀 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 • Join the Indra Jatra festival in Kathmandu to witness Nepal's rich cultural heritage, traditions, and mythology.
