The Faraday motor was the first electric motor, first demonstrated in 1821 by Michael Faraday. This video shows step-by-step how to make one using copper wire, aluminum foil, salt water and a 9 volt battery. It then explains how it works by showing how an electric current running through a wire at right angles to a magnetic field will experience a force that is in a direction perpendicular to both those.
