How to Grout A Mosaic

In this video I show how to grout a mosaic. Follow along and I will also post the steps below in this description. • ---------------------------------------------------- • Grouting Your Mosaic: • Step 1: Preparation • Grout outdoors if at all possible to minimize dust contamination and clean up of wet grout. Wherever you work, set up a clean area to work in and make sure you have all the tools you will need. Place newspapers down and work on top of them. Use a disposable recycled container from the kitchen to mix grout in. • Step 2: Mixing the Grout • Wear a dust mask when you do this step, or cover your face with a bandanna. Use a popsicle stick or other disposable tool to stir your grout. Save a tablespoon of grout to the side. Mix just a wee bit of water in at a time. You do not want to get the mixture too wet. Stir all the dry particles, you want the consistency of thick peanut butter. If you get the mixture too wet use that tablespoon of dry grout you set aside and mix it in to thicken. • Step 3: Slaking the GroutAllow the grout to sit for 10 minutes and then stir it up again. This is called slaking, it insures that all the particles and binders are hydrated. • Step 4: Grout the Mosaic • This is the least complicated step. You just need to grab a glob of grout and mush it into the mosaic. Keep doing this until all areas have been covered in grout. • Step 5 : Wipe Excess Grout • Use paper towel or dry sponge to wipe the excess grout from the surface. I use recycled pages from catalogs and magazines. You do not want to add water when you are cleaning the grout, you want to wipe it dry as much as possible. Adding water will weaken the grout. • Step 6: Clean Your Work AreaThrow unused grout in the trash. Throw out container you mixed into.
