In 2012, my Army unit landed in a place that was below freezing to transfer onto a military plane to fly into Afghanistan. The picture of me in uniform does not mean the DoD or Army endorses me. It does mean that the Army sent us to freeze just before sending us to a desert. While waiting, I thought about landing in the country, my unit doing our mission, and everyone coming home safe. We all think about coming home. You wonder what life would be like and what things would change. • While at the Kandahar Airfield in 2013, I interviewed by Skype with Jackie Lacey, the District Attorney of Los Angeles, in the early morning to be a deputy district attorney when I came home. I connected from inside a Conex, another name for a shipping container, that had a few computers with spotty internet. The video did not work on my end. I could not see. But luckily, the audio and video worked in Los Angeles. • I had defended soldiers and was a legal advisor for the Army on fiscal law. We did not talk about those things. We talked about public service and serving the people of Los Angeles. Afterward, I walked down a path lined with concrete bunkers and returned to thinking about the present and immediate. That interview changed what life would be like when I returned home. • Ms. Lacey’s decision put me on a path to serve the people of Los Angeles and to gain the experience to be here today. I am grateful for her decision. Ms. Lacey and I recently talked about our first meeting and, if my campaign is successful, that I would serve much differently than what I spoke about from Afghanistan. I am proud to have her support. • From my life and work in service, I appreciate the impact of our decisions. As a child of refugees, it was a dangerous journey, with leaps of faith, kind hearts, and many decisions made by public servants that brought my parents to Los Angeles to start a new life. This background influences my thinking about our impact on the world, especially my service overseas. With this experience, I will always respect that there are enduring generational consequences to government decisions and actions for people and communities. • #StevenMacforJudge, Office No. 135
