Nrityanilaya Bharatanatyam Academy in association with Swaabhi presents ‘9 Devis’ a heartfelt devotional offering to the power of divine feminism and to the journey of self-development and attainments through self realisation. • Vamapadollasat Lohalatakantakabhushana VardhanamUrdhvaja Krishna Kalaratrirbhayankari॥ • “The ferocious Devi Kalaratri, who has a dark complexion, whose body is adorned with thorns and metal ornaments, is born out of an evolved mind, may she bless me” • Kalaratri – ‘Kala’ in Sanskrit has two meanings, one is time and the other is color black. This unique incarnation of Goddess Durga is depicted with all things which one tends to look down upon and avoid. Having a complexion of the darkest of nights, bountiful black hair, seated on a donkey and four hands, two of them holding scimitar and thunderbolt, she wears a necklace made of skulls, emits lightening from her three eyes and flames through her nostrils. • While there are many stories behind this form of Durga, the most common story narrates existence of a demon named ‘Raktabija’ having a boon that if any drop of his blood falls onto the ground, it will form his clone. With this power, he became indestructible, with innumerable clones. When in a battle with Raktabija, Kalaratri became so furious at this, that she drank every ounce of his blood and killed him. However, her rage became so fiercely and destructive that she started gulping down anything that came her way. Finally Lord Shiva had to lay himself at her feet and that’s when she bit her tongue out of her guilt and vented her anger to finally calm down. Many idols of Kaali, depict this final scene from the story. • The Kalaratri form sends a strong message to break down our shackles to consider the dark and empty aspects of existence as unholy. Darkness gives birth to light and houses the infinite universe and also brings solace to every living being in the night. A perspective that can look at everything as sacred, being truly cognizant and comfortable with nothingness of existence is the real message of this form. Only when one reaches this state, can one enjoy the beauty of existence. Kalaratri dwells in the Sahasrara Chakra, the place on top of the head from where the soul leaves the body at death. It is often referred to as a thousand-petal lotus, and is the most subtle chakra in the system, relating to pure consciousness, a state of Nirvana. • Performed by - Manasi Girme • Choreography and concept by- Mrs. Swaroopa Utgi • Music by- Amod kulkarni • Rights reserved @ Swaroopa utgi classical dance co • #navratri #swaabhi #bharatnatyam #indianclassicaldance #kalaratri #navadurga
