RETRO MOVIE REVIEW | Fitzcarraldo | Brilliance or Insanity? • Werner Herzog was either a genius or insane, and I lean towards the insane after watching Fitzcarraldo after over 40 years and learning more and more about the production of the film. There are a lot of movies that have troubled productions, but this one may take first prize for most bonkers and out of control. Over five years in production, multiple lead actors, multiple civil conflicts, multiple injuries and loss of life on set, and a budget that no one can seem to pin down- either $14 million or $5.5 million- and at this point, does it really matter? The movie flopped. It led to more studio control over film making and marked the end of an era as the creative fervor of the '70's came to a close.
