The AK-47 is one of the most elegantly simple firearm designs of all time. But a few parts of Mikhail Kalashnikov's design can be improved upon, including the fiddly Shepherd's Hook that retains the trigger mechanism. Brownells Gun Tech Caleb Savant shows us how to swap the Shepherd's Hook for a retainer plate from Tapco, Power Custom, or other part supplier. The retainer plate locks your AK's hammer and trigger pins in place, while still allowing easy removal of the fire control group for cleaning or making adjustments. First, Caleb field strips the rifle and shows us how to remove the safety. There are two ways to get the Shepherd's Hook out: the hard way and Caleb's way. He shows us the latter. With the hook removed, the retainer plate drops right in. Reassemble the rifle, check for proper operation of the safety and disconnector… and now it's a lot easier to disassemble the trigger of your AK-47 / AK-74 / AKM for cleaning or adjustment. • More Brownells videos: http://www.brownellsvideos.com
