A time-lapse movie of metaphase during meiosis I through cytokinesis in a primary spermatocyte of the crane-fly Nephrotoma suturalis. Images were acquired with a liquid crystal polarized light microscope (LC-PolScope) that reveals microtubules as birefringent structures in cells without antibody labeling or special staining regimens. Here, one look up table ( green fire blue ) of ImageJ was used to colorize the images; this gives the extremely birefringent structures (e.g., microtubular spindle fibers) a bright yellow appearance, while less birefringent structures appear green to blue. The background is nearly black because it is not birefringent. • Video courtesy of James LaFountain and Rudolf Oldenbourg, State University of New York at Buffalo and Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole. • See more reproduction images in the Cell Picture Show: https://www.cell.com/pictureshow/repr...
