Fisherman are well acquainted with this beneficial insect as bait. Finding the adult fly at your night light indicates there is a nearby, fast moving, pure and healthy stream! They are short-lived just like so many of the other moths under the night lights. And they do not eat as adults. The male Dobson fly is a scary looking monster insect with 1 ½” sickle shaped mandibles that will spook any predator. • Larvae of the Dobson Fly are called hellgrammites. The larvae can live 1-3 years under rocks in fast moving stream water. When it is time to pupate they will wander up on the shorelines and dig a cell in which they will pupate. In Virginia it has been observed that sometimes after a thunderstorm a multitude of hellgrammites may march up the shore to pupate in a synchronized crawl! Beware they can bite you. • Joyce Browning Horticulturist, Master Gardener Coordinator • Video credit: Bethany Evans Longwood Gardens Professional Gardener Program Alumni; CPH • • The University of Maryland Extension Home and Garden Information Center's mission is to develop and deliver science-based, sustainable gardening information and solutions through outreach education for better human and environmental health. • • Send us your plant and pest questions.
