Did you know that the world’s largest Hindu temple isn’t in India, but in Cambodia? • Angkor Wat, located in Cambodia, is the largest religious temple in the world. • It covers 400 acres and was once the center of the powerful Khmer Empire. • Built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, the temple was dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. • The design of Angkor Wat is based on Hindu beliefs. The walls are covered with detailed carvings that tell stories, like the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk. ' • The temple also has one of the most advanced water systems ever built at the time. • Sadly, the Khmer Empire fell. This happened because of water problems like floods and droughts, as well as outside attacks. • The city of Angkor was abandoned, but Angkor Wat still stood. Even after almost 900 years, Angkor Wat remains standing. It has survived wars, nature, and time. • Today, millions of people visit to see its beauty and learn about the past.
