Learn the basics of constructing a dry stack wall with stone mason Daniel Medina and landscape expert Shannon Hathaway. • Written details here: http://blog.soil3.com/how-to-build-a-... • A dry stack stone wall is the easiest stone wall to build, so it's great for beginners! Maximum height of this dry stack wall is 10 to 12 inches. It's great for edging but isn't strong enough to be a retaining wall. Make sure the stone you choose is flat so it's easier to work with. For low walls, thin stones look best. Sort through stones before you start building. Select pieces of the same width that will fit nicely next to each other. Before you start building, level out the ground where you plan to lay the stone. Start stacking the stones. makes sure they're as level as possible before adding each new layer. Stagger the stones like brickwork to make the wall more stable. Keep the straight edge of the rocks at the front of the wall, unless you want a rustic, natural look. Use a stone hammer to shape any pieces that need some help. Place pretty, large, flat rocks on top of the all as capstones. For added drainage and stability, use gravel or small rocks pieces behind the wall. Then, back fill soil or compost behind your wall. If planting at the base of a tree, move soil away from the base of the tree to avoid smothering roots.
