Despite their keen attunement to emotions and energies, many highly sensitive people (HSPs) struggle with empathy. This paradox reveals the complex interplay between heightened sensitivity and the challenge of stepping into another's shoes. HSPs experience increased sensitivity to sensory input and have strong emotional reactions to events, often feeling deeply moved by art, music, or personal interactions. However, their intense personal emotional experiences can overwhelm their capacity to process others' feelings simultaneously, leading to emotional saturation. To protect themselves from further emotional overload, HSPs may unconsciously withdraw from empathizing fully, resulting in a perceived lack of empathy despite their inherent sensitivity. Balancing their own intense feelings with those of others is a significant challenge. Regular self-care practices, such as emotional regulation, energy recharging, stress reduction, and establishing boundaries, can help HSPs manage their emotions and improve their capacity for empathy, enhancing their resilience and mental health. • Daniel J.
