Té Con Té How to Make the Singani Toddy

Te Con Te is a traditional Bolivian drink that's like a Hot Toddy (   • Hot Toddy - How to Make the Classic H...  ) made with Singani, Black Tea, Cinnamon and Lime (for garnish). It's big and complex. It tastes like a boozy cinnamon tea. It's warm and it coats your throat, but is just thick enough on the palate to be extremely comforting, especially in cold weather. • In Bolivia, their cold weather months are June, July and August. Which is just the opposite for us Yankees. Té Con Té is a drink that appropriate for any cold weather, but in Bolivia it's particularly popular during the Noche de San Juan (or San Juan Night), which is a little pegan, turned Christian fiesta that falls on the longest night of the year and is popular in Bolivia, particularly in the highlands. • This version is made 2:1, tea to Singani. It's a little on the strong-side, but not harsh, just potent. Singani really shines in this one. It's a strongly flavored spirit; its flavor is hard to bury. But what's so great about this one is that all the flavors come to life when combined and they all get along so well. • Singani is definitely the only way to make this one. It's a 500-year-old spirit from the Bolivian highlands, that until recently, was basically only available in Bolivia. Luckily for those outside of Bolivia, brands like Singani 63, Rujero and Los Parrales are slowly spreading the wings of this spirit and making it available. • I'm certainly an evangelist for the spirit, but part of that is because it's so unique. The same grape, grown and distilled in neighboring South American countries like Chile and Peru, produces a Moscatel Pisco that is really good in it's own right (it's drier and a different experience), but only a shadow of the flavor explosion that is Singani. The big difference being the elevation in Bolivia. The harsh environment makes the skin of the grape thicker and more fragrant, which comes through in a big way in the final distillate. • So, if you were to make this drink with a different base spirit, say a Moscatel Pisco or Rhum Agricole or a (smoke-free) Mezcal, you'd end up with a really good drink, but a really different one. It would be like a Sidecar compared to a Margarita compared to a White Lady, the biggest difference between the drinks is the base spirit, but that makes all the difference sometimes. • Té Con Té is an odd name. Apparently no one in Bolivia questions it. It just is what it is. It literally means tea with tea. Perhaps the black tea and spirits is an influence of the English, who helped build the railroads in Bolivia and who's influence lead to the Chuflay (   • Chuflay (aka Singani Mule) - An Intro...  ), a sort of Singani Buck. Unfortunately, I couldn't fully pin down the etymology of the name of the drink. • Whatever the story, this is an amazing drink and incredibly easy to make. I made it for one serving, but it could be easily scaled for a party (see recipes below). It will certainly be the life of the party and if it's cold outside, it will help you keep warm inside. ¡Salud! • • Recipe: • (for one person) • 4 oz water • 1 tsp black tea • 1 cinnamon stick • 2 oz Singani • • (for 4 people) • 16 oz water • 4 tsp black tea • 3 cinnamon sticks • 8 oz Singani • • Brew the tea with the cinnamon. Once brewed, add Singani to the teapot. Pour into warmed mug. Garnish with a lime wheel. • • Music: • El Toque De Rafa 2 by Håkan Eriksson • via Epidemic Sound • • Follow Us! •   / distinguishedspirits   •   / distinguishedspirits   •   / distinguishedsp   •   / distinguishedsp   • • Featured in This Drink: • Rujero Singani • http://www.chufly.com/rujerosingani • Groundwork English Breakfast Tea • https://www.groundworkcoffee.com/prod... • Cinnamon Sticks • http://amzn.to/2jG6zWi • • Singani 63 • http://singani63.com/ • Campo de Encanto Moscatel Pisco • http://www.encantopisco.com/#our-pisco • La Favorite Rhum Agricole • http://www.caribbean-spirits.com/labe... • Mezcal Tosba • http://mezcaltosba.com/eng/?page_id=25 • • Bar Tools: • Jarritos Mug • http://amzn.to/2kYV6Ce • OXO Angled Measuring Cup 2oz • http://amzn.to/2jGcnz8 • OXO Good Grips Measuring Spoons with Magnetic Snaps • http://amzn.to/2jYxcqj • Bonavita Electric Kettle, Gooseneck, 1.0L • http://amzn.to/2jG8xpJ • Cast Iron Tea Pot • http://amzn.to/2jYBFcw • Cutting Board • http://amzn.to/2jGbI0E • Paring Knife • http://amzn.to/2kYULPS
