The Vedas are, of course, the highest authority. However, Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran is like the essence of the Vedic teachings, written by Ved Vyas himself. Knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads is presented in such a blissful manner, with all the Divine pastimes of God and His devotees, that listening to the Bhagwat Katha becomes an experience in itself. Not only does it illuminates our intellect with Divine wisdom, it also moves our heart and fills them with the nectar of Divine love. That is why it is said that this Srimad Bhagavatam or Bhagwat Katha has something that even the Vedas do not have. • The great battle of Mahabharat was over. Most of the warriors had died. In Pandava's side there were few remaining and in Kaurava's side there were only four- Duryodhan, Kripacharya, Kritaverma and Ashwathama. At this point, Ashwathama thought of getting back at the Pandavas. He went to the Pandava's tent in the night and mistakenly killed five sons of pandavas. But, Duryodhana did not like this act of brutality and he rebuked Ashwathama for destroying the dynasty of Pandavas. In the morning when everybody discovered about the incident, Arjuna and Lord Krishna went after Ashwathama. In fury, Ashwatham released the Brahmastra. He knew how to release it but didn't know how to call it back. Lord Krishna suggested Arjuna to release another Brahmastra. Now all the celestial gods got anxious, that if these two Brahmastras collide, the whole universe will be annihilated in a second. Lord Shiva, at last intervened and pacified the two Brahmastras. • After that Arjuna caught Ashwathama, tied him and dragged him to Draupadi, who granted him amnesty saying, I don't want his mother to go through the same pain that I am going through at present. As a punishment, Arjun took out a mani (precious stone) that was embedded in the forehead of Ashwathama since his birth and left him with a scare. But, since Ashwathama was a vile man, he didn't give-up his evil ways. So in order to take revange he again released Brahmastra but aimed it towards Arjuna's son Abhimanyu's son who was still in his mother Uttara's womb. So when Uttara saw the Brahmastra coming, she screamed for help from Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna entered in his subtle form in the womb and saved the baby in the womb. This baby was Parikshit, who became the listener of Srimad Bhagavatam.
