In 865, when the Vikings began their invasion of England, Wessex was one of the strongest kingdoms resisting the invasion. When Æthelred died in a battle against the Vikings in 871, Alfred ascended to the throne of Wessex. In 878, Viking leader Guthrum launched a major attack on Wessex, forcing Alfred to flee. However, Alfred quickly regrouped and organized a resistance by establishing a small fort at Athelney. Later that year, he won a decisive victory against the Vikings at the Battle of Edington. Following this victory, a peace treaty was made with Guthrum, and the Vikings were forced to withdraw from Wessex. • #history #ancienthistory #historychannel
