Eritrea Fighting on Ethiopian border

(5 Jun 1998) T/I: 10:12:20 • • • Heavy fighting continued on Thursday (04/06) between Eritrea and Ethiopa. Eritrean soldiers were taking up positions at the border post of Zale Ambasa after regaining the area from the Ethiopians on Wednesday (03/06). Late Thursday the British and American embassies advised foreign nationals to leave the country as soon as possible. Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi accepted on Thursday a US-Rwandan peace plan to settle a mounting border dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Eritrea became formally independent from Ethiopia in 1993 after • seceding in 1991, the year rebel armies from both countries ousted dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam's regime in Addis Ababa.
