https://cuddly.com/donate/4941955/mam... • Even though she was just a puppy herself, even though she was starving and hurting just as much as any stray in Texas was, this selfless Rottweiler mama gave everything to her newborns. • There might have been a part of her that knew their chances were slim...but it didn't stop her from protecting them, from going out every day in search of food so she could produce enough milk for them. It didn't stop her from seeking help from humans, despite the fact that it was likely humans who forced her into the shell of a life she was living. • It was an ordinary day when one of our friends went out to do feedings for a group of strays that she'd been looking after for some time. But then something unusual happened. One of the rottweiler girls, usually one of the first to approach for food, vanished moments after appearing. Sensing that something was wrong, the feeder followed her tracks and came across a nearby horse barn, where faint squeals and tiny barks echoed in the air. • Inside, was the mama rottweiler who took one look at the feeder and wiggled her body in excitement...or perhaps, relief. She led her to one of the stalls where a litter of 12 tiny, helpless puppies lay in the corner. There wasn't any food or clean water around, cords and wires crisscrossed the ground around them, and horses were still frequenting the stalls, leaving them all under danger of being crushed. All it would take is one wrong step. A dirty plastic bucket, left behind for the horses, held some stagnant water—which we assume was Mama's only source to drink from. • Mama wagged her tail gently as if she knew help had arrived, as though she was finally allowing herself to feel a bit of hope. It seemed she’d taken shelter here in desperation, likely scrambling in as labor began, knowing it wasn’t safe but having no other place to go. The pups were dirty and being surrounded by flies, clearly already worn down from exposure in the short time they'd been alive. We knew that no matter how much she tried, Mama couldn’t provide much for her puppies, given the state of her own health so without a second thought, we brought all 13 into our care. • They’re now in a safe foster home, but the road to recovery is going to be long. Each puppy needs wellness exams, deworming, antibiotics, and regular feedings, while Mama requires testing, nourishment, and supportive treatment for any hidden issues. One of the puppies has a lump on its neck that needs to be checked out immediately too for any danger. Taking in this family has been a huge undertaking, but together, we know we can give them a new chance at life.
