The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was truly a unique nation. The product of a marriage between two rulers - Jadwiga of Poland and Jogaila / Wladyslaw II Jagiello, Grand Duke of Lithuania - it was multi-ethnic, quasi-democratic with an elected monarch, defended Christianity from Ottoman encroachment, and so much more. • And yet, despite this or, perhaps, because of it, the Commonwealth would be torn apart by its contemporary rivals.
