Author Phil DeVol focuses on engaging people in poverty in building communities and another on prison re-entry models. Getting Ahead While Getting Out is a pre-release learning experience that helps men and women create a restoration story for themselves and their communities. They complete three plans to put into use upon their release. The first is the 72 Hour Plan covering the most dangerous period, the second deals with immediate needs and the third plan is to achieve complete restoration. But personal responsibility on the part of graduates is not enough to assure restoration because they face many barriers that are beyond their control. This restoration model calls for communities to work shoulder to shoulder with returning citizens to overcome barriers at the institutional, community, and policy levels.
